I am writing to you in response to the request for additional information to item 3 of my accident report. The reason for the incident was called by me "underestimation of the circumstances." You have asked for more detailed explanations and I hope that the following description of what happened below will satisfy you.
I am a bricklayer by profession. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a newly built six-story building. When I finished my work, I found that I had extra bricks left, which, as it turned out, weighed about 230 kilograms. In order not to carry them by hand to the bottom, I decided to lower them to the ground in a barrel, using the spool attached to the wall of the building under construction. I went downstairs, locked the rope, climbed back onto the roof, and put the bricks in the barrel. Then I went down again and untied the rope, holding it lightly so that the bricks were lowered slowly.
In item 11 of the incident report I indicated that my own weight was 60 kilograms. To my surprise, I jumped off the ground so suddenly, I forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I kept climbing the wall of the building at high speed. Somewhere on the third floor I met a barrel, which at that moment was moving down to the ground with equally impressive speed. This may explain the skull fracture, as well as the minor abrasions and broken clavicle, which are described in item 3 of the incident report.
I continued my fast ascent, its speed being slightly reduced after my collision with the barrel, and I did not stop before the fingers of my right hand hit the reel. Fortunately, by this time I had already recovered and held on tight to the rope, instead of succumbing completely to the pain. At about the same time, the barrel had apparently reached the ground, and when it hit it, its bottom came loose. At this point, already relieved of the weight of the bricks left on the ground, the barrel weighed about 25 kilograms.
Again, I invite you to pay attention to the data on my own weight. As you can imagine, now I began to quickly descend the wall of the building. Towards the third floor I met again with the barrel, which this time was going up. This brought fractures to both my ankles, broken teeth and several lacerations on my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to betray me slightly. My encounter with the barrel, however, slowed me down enough to reduce my injuries when I fell on the pile of bricks, and fortunately the consequences were only a few fractured vertebrae.
